Incandescent or LED Grow Lights
Today we have the luxury of choice – LED grow lights or the old regular incandescent grow light. Both have certain advantages and disadvantages and yet both are extensively used in modern grow rooms for all sorts of plant production, both commercial plant growing and for the hobby gardener. More people are switching to LED lighting for the economic benefits but their high initial cost can be off putting for others.
Incandescent lights are normal lights that are found in regular home light fittings and now even outside with the likes of outdoor lantern string lights. These types of bulbs in indoor gardening are used to shine light on the grow table, or the area used for indoor gardening, and so enhance indoor growing. They are however not a great solution and are technically not really true grow lights, even if they are labeled as such. The light they produce is actually pretty useless as a growing aid. The average life span for a normal incandescent light used in a grow room is at most 750 hours. Its use of electricity is very inefficient since most of its electricity consumption is used to product heat, not light – a common problem with many lighting units. There are many different kinds of grow lights that people use and incandescent lights are one of the worst examples. Other light sources such as HPS – High Pressure Sodium lights or even florescent grow lights produce a much better light spectrum well suited to plant growth. So strike the incandescent light off your list right away. Let’s look at LED grow lights as an alternative that is fast becoming a popular choice of professionals and amateurs alike. Led Grow Lights are Efficient.
An Led growing light uses very little power to produce maximum light. Led grow lights are a great power saver due to their efficiency. This has a major impact on the running costs particularly where they are used for extended periods of time , that is why many professional grow rooms are switching from their conventional lighting to led technology. Initially the costs of buying the units is still quite high but they lead to great savings in a short time and the professionals have realized this. The cost of these lights is already coming down and will continue to do so as their use becomes even more widespread. They are also becoming popular in other uses both as indoor LED lights and indeed many landscape lighting applications.
Led Lights Last a Lot Longer.
The average HPS or florescent lamp life is 10,000 hours. The average led grow lamp lasts for 50,000 hours and more! That is an average of five times the length of conventional lamps. This is yet another reason people choose to go with led grow lamps. Again the long term cost benefits are clear.
Led Lighting Produces Light… Not Heat!
Led grow lights produce a lot less heat than incandescent lighting or indeed other lighting methods. Led grow light technology produces lamps that feed on electricity sparingly and convert only a tiny fraction of their energy consumption into heat. For a grow room, this means that the grower doesn’t have to spend money on expensive ducting and cooling units. They are also safer with a reduced risk of fire and less chance of operatives being burned.
The choice between incandescent or LED grow lights is clearly obvious. Led lights are by far the more practical and useful of the two – not to mention economical! Not only do led lights use less electricity and put out more light but they last longer and produce a lot less heat. If you are setting up a grow room and have to choose between these two lights, you should definitely go with led grow lights.
